How to customise the Mac Dock, from Settings to a Dock with widgets
In System Settings › Desktop & Dock you can change the Dock’s size, magnification and position and have it hide itself. The Terminal goes a little further, like adding spaces between icons. Widgets, a Dock per context and themes take an app that replaces the Dock, like PrimoDock.
In System Settings
Open System Settings › Desktop & Dock. There you will find:
- Size and Magnification, which enlarges the icon under the pointer.
- Position on screen: left, bottom or right.
- Minimise windows using the Genie or Scale effect.
- Automatically hide and show the Dock.
- Show suggested and recent apps in Dock.
- Show indicators for open applications.
In the Terminal
Some settings have no button. Paste the line into Terminal and press Return; the Dock restarts straight away.
An empty space between icons, to separate groups:
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock The Dock showing with no delay when it is hidden:
defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-delay -float 0; killall Dock And to undo all of it and go back to the factory Dock:
defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock What the Mac Dock does not do
- A Dock per context. It is the same Dock at work, at home and in focus.
- Widgets. No calendar, weather or song playing in the Dock.
- Themes. It looks like the system, and that is it.
- Change icons in bulk. Only one at a time, through Finder.
A Dock with workspaces, widgets and themes
- Workspaces: work, home and focus, each with its own apps and windows. Turning on a macOS Focus switches workspace by itself.
- Widgets that open: calendar, weather, music, battery and Claude usage, among 31.
- Themes: Liquid Glass, Paper, Neon and the seasonal Halloween and Christmas ones, with snow, bats and fairy lights.
- Icon packs applied in one click, and IconStudio to draw your own.
- A pet on the bar: cat, dog, dragon or little ghost.
How to install it
- Get the .dmg on the download page. It runs on Apple Silicon and Intel.
- Drag PrimoDock to Applications and open it.
- Follow what it asks the first time. The Mac Dock is hidden and the 7-day trial starts.
- To get the Mac Dock back, just quit the app.
